Hopes and dreams for my (future) kids

Do you ever dream up of plans for your future (or already existing) children. Don’t lie, I know you do.

I do. And at times they can be rather extravagant, too much, or unrealistic. I was thinking about that the other day, well I do most every day. I want to write them out to see how crazy ambitious I am…and thought I could share. :)

Here we go…

  • I want a big family first of all
  • know multiple languages
  • be able to defend themselves…know some sort of martial arts or fighting style
  • how to work on cars (even the girls), so they won’t be fooled by any deceitful car salesman or mechanic
  • get to job shadow or explore as many professions as possible…I don’t want them to get to a point in their life where they feel pressured to choose, I want them to be well equipped, even if college is not the option for them
  • I would love to live in a multi-cultural area
  • lots of sports
  • healthy eating and exercise habits (gotta jump on that one, I am horrible at this)
  • family nights
  • LOTS of pictures
  • lots of outdoor activities
  • I want them to be ok with NOT having a tv
  • a heart to help the “least of these”
  • LOTS of cuddle time
  • to be knowledgeable of world events, history, science…lol I guess just school subjects in general

Ok, I know there are more, but that is all I can think of right now. I am sure I will add on later.

25 things about me

On Facebook there is a new trend (right word?) to write a note titled “25 Things About Me”. I have already posted on there my list, but I keep thinking about other things I want to add. So I thought I would post on here too, with my additions.

1. I am the oldest of 4 children.
2. My favorite color is green…all shades, but lime green.
3. I have killed 5 chickens while in the Philippines…for food of course.
4. I have ridden a water buffalo.
5. I used to work at a mechanic shop.
6. I want a big family.
7. I love old time-y traditions.
8. I make my husband feel very claustrophobic just by being me (I am not allowed in the kitchen if he is in there b/c it is so small and have do not have any type of understanding on “personal space”).
9. I love to snack.
10. I wish I was crafty.
11. I want to learn how to make soap.
12. Tim and I hope to adopt one day, at least 3 children.
13. I like to cook, but don’t normally.
14. I am tired a lot.
15. I have trouble not trying to lead when I am with a group of people a lot of the time.
16. I have been to the Philippies and Costa Rica.
17. I am hooked on the show “House”.
18. My husband and I knew that we loved each other only a couple days of meeting (we still both believe that).
19. I want to open an orphanage in a third world country one day (hopefully the Philippines)
20. I had a great idea to invent a grocery store with a drive through pick up, but then learned this past weekend that Harris Teeter has already caught on to that. Dang it!
21. I love working with groups of people, but am not so great with the one on one.
22. I really like to read blogs, probably too much.
23. I wish I could travel more.
24. I love kiddos!!
25. Every time I get a paper towel from a roll, I have a habit for always taking two. I have it in my head that only one will not be enough

more like a “trivette week”

So like I said before, the past week and one-half has been a lot more eventful than expected…or wanted. Saturday morning we slept in. It was glorious! The night before we had rented a lot of movies (like 6 movies for only $9 at Food City Video), so I just lounged around for a couple of hours eating and watching movies. Tim decided that he wanted to be a little more productive so he scrubbed down the bathroom.

After he was done cleaning the bathroom he went and started fooling around in the kitchen. All of a sudden I heard water hitting a surface in the bathroom. I thought the shower head may be draining (even though I have never noticed it doing that before). I asked Tim what he thought it was, and then we both went to investigate. It was not the shower head. It was water pouring out of the air vent!

Tim and I kind of freaked out for about a minute, then we went into action. We got buckets and towels together b/c there was A LOT of water coming out. He called emergency maintenance while I tended to the leak. The 8 gallon bucket was filling up in about 2 minutes each time. Then the water started leaking through the ceiling above the shower (at least that one was a little more convenient).

In the end, the water was coming through our closet, bathroom and hallway. And in the midst of it all, it started coming through our fire alarm, causing it to go off. The light fixtures are the globe kind and were filling up with water.

Through it all we could not help but laugh. It was just so crazy, and funny. Tim said that he didn’t know why he didn’t expect something like this week b/c nothing crazy has happened to him in awhile (he just doesn’t have a good memory).

Things are good now. We are still staying with family. We are hoping to move back in soon, and get things cleaned up (no matter how much it overwhelms me – we had to dump the entire contents of our closet into our bedroom and on top of our bed).

It is funny because through all of the craziness, I haven’t really been bothered much (besides my closet throwing up into my bedroom). I have actually had a good time, but I think it is because I have had Tim by my side. I love him, and he calms me (even if he is freaking out).

trivette night? yeah right! more like a trivette week!

Don’t have much time now, but more to come later. Just wanted to share with you that not only did we have both vehicles break down last week, Saturday the water main burst flooding our apartment. We have been staying with family. I miss my bed. Pictures and details (I promise it will be shorter than the last post) to come…

“a Trivette night”

I had not learned of what a Trivette night was until last nights set of events. After the craziness that was last night, my husband informed me that his family is known to have crazy things happen to them like we did last night and that he forgot to tell me about it before we got married. Thanks a lot (just kidding :) . Also, be warned this is long, but hilarious (at least the people I have told about this have thought so).

I will start with yesterday morning. I went outside to start the car so it could warm up before I left for work. I put the key in the ignition, and got nothing. The battery was dead. So instead of getting Tim out in the cold, I just took his truck to work (all of his plans for the day consisted of staying at the apartment). So I drove to work, and had a great day. I told my boss what was going on and he offered a car for us to borrow. We can deal with only having one vehicle, we have before. So I thanked him and told him I didn’t think we would need it.

The day went along. I originally thought that I would be teaching a class at church last night but at the last minute found out that they did not need me. So that was a nice surprise to get to hang out with Tim for the evening.

I came home to all of the furniture stacked up in the kitchen, on top of our couch or on top of our bed. Tim had arranged for our floors to be shampooed during the day. When you live in a one-bedroom apartment with two dogs, you need to get your carpet shampooed. And because our complex offers it for free once a month, we gladly accepted. When the shampooer man (I hope no one who holds that particular position reads this, I am sure that is a ridiculous name for them) finished up, he told Tim to try not walking on the carpet much until it dries. So last night, just about every time I walked on the carpet, he flipped out.

Usually, I am not allowed in the kitchen if he is in there. I know that it sounds ridiculous, but he is extremely claustrophobic, and I don’t understand the meaning of personal space. With those two thrown into the mix of an extremely small kitchen usually do not turn out well. So he just made the rule for me to stay out of the kitchen if he is in there.

Last night I would stand on the carpet just outside of the kitchen. When he would point out that I was standing on the carpet, I would say that I was confused b/c I am also not allowed in the kitchen (he was cooking at this point). So he took that rule away for the evening. :D After that both of us cooked (with me making sure I stayed standing in my very small space) tacos for dinner. Then we set two chairs upright and ate together.

(Ha! Tim hates taking pictures!)

Ok, so we have eaten and now need to go to Wal-Mart. We decide to go ahead and try to jump off my car. So we hook up the jumper cables to my car and his truck. He goes to start his truck, and it is dead. No joke. We are sitting in our parking lot, with BOTH vehicles dead. What the…. We try to figure out what in the world we are going to do. I have to go to work tomorrow, 30 minutes away. And Tim starts school (tomorrow actually meaning today). So I call my boss and tell him I am going to have to take him up on the offer of borrowing his car. And Tim has to call someone who will take us to his house. We get all of that set up. Great.

We still cannot believe what is going on and are still trying to figure out what we are going to do with our vehicles and what in the world could be wrong with them. I very loudly proclaimed that I didn’t do anything to them to make them both die on the SAME DAY. While we were talking about it all, I remembered that when he put his key in the ignition, his truck made that annoying buzzing noise, it just wouldn’t start. So I made the ridiculous suggestion that maybe his truck would have just enough power to jump off my car. What could we lose (besides this crazy suggestion causing his battery to drain and possibly kill the alternator too)?! So we went for it. AND IT WORKED!!! There was just enough energy to jump off my car, and then my car jumped off his truck. HA! We still have no clue how that happened. Our vehicles revived each other! **Side Note: When telling my dear friend Katie about this, she said, “Jess, that is beautiful! That is a great depiction of your marriage! You should write that in your journal!” I love that girl.**

So our cars are both working, but we are concerned they might not start in the morning. Off to Advanced Auto Parts we go. Getting into my car, I somehow slam my head into the door frame of the car. Ouch. Then we get there and I go in to get someone while Tim stays with the cars. For some reason, I decided to tell the guy they whole story. :) I don’t really know why, that is just me. Later Tim asked why I did that, I had no answer for him.

He comes out to do the diagnostic test, and discover it is the same thing for both of our vehicles. The clamp that attaches the cables from the engine to the studs from the battery is broken on both vehicles. It costs a total of $9 to fix. HALLELUJAH!! Praise the Lord it was nothing too expensive.

Tim fixes his truck at the store and decides b/c we still need to go to Wal-Mart, he will just fix mine at home. We head over to Wal-Mart, then head home. He starts to working on mine and discovers that mine is going to be a lot harder than his. And with no light, it’s freezing outside, and it’s really late, we decide maybe we need to call my boss back and ask to borrow the car again (thanks Dave!). At least now we have one working vehicle.

We head over and pick up the borrowed vehicle, and then come back home. Thank goodness the carpet is dry at this point! I start to put all of the furniture back. We are sitting around the living room and Tim tells me about a phone call he had with his brother earlier that night. He called Rob and told him that he has had a “Trivette night”. Rob said, “oh s#!t, what happened?”. Apparently just by saying that he had had a Trivette night, Rob knew something crazy had happened. Apparently it comes with the family to have things like this happened. They all have their own set of stories. Great. Tim said, “I forgot to mention that before we got married”. Thanks for that.

We are getting ready for bed when we see the final ridiculous occurrence of the night happen. The very night of getting our carpet shampooed, our lovely dog, the one that Tim claims is his dog, decides to drag his butt across our carpet. We just casually tell him to stop b/c we have seen him do it before. Only this time, a brown streak goes across the carpet! Holy cow! I cannot believe this! Tim is flipping out again while I am trying to get the streak up. He is very calmly telling Blu (our dog) that he would gladly get rid of him at this point (which is a big deal, he always says that our more rambunctious dog Kansas, my dog, would be the one we would get rid of). I can’t help but laugh on the inside. I have the wisdom at this point to not laugh out loud.

After all of that, I randomly get hyper and annoy the crap out of Tim. Then we go to bed. Neither of us can really sleep, but at least all of that is over.

In the next room….

…is a couple who will soon (like in the next couple of minutes) meet the birth mom of their future child. I am so excited for them! This is definitely one of the coolest things I have ever gotten to witness.

Wake Up Call

I had a huge Wake Up Call yesterday. Since I have started working at my new job, I get to meet TONS of people who work or serve with other ministries (since part of the purpose of the ministry I work for is to serve other ministries and businesses).

I have been so excited because the local chapter of Bethany Christian Services (an adoption agency that I have been looking into for when Tim and I begin the adoption process) is actually located in the SAME BUILDING I work in. I have been so excited about the possibility to learn more about the adoption process, primarily international. Yes, I do want to domestically adopt too, but I have always been more interested and invested in international adoption. I know the countries I want to adopt from, I have researched lots of orphanages in those countries, I have viewed lists of waiting children, found and avidly read blogs of families who are adopting from those countries, so on, and so on. Needless to say, I am invested in the need to adopt from all over the world.

Yesterday my boss spoke with me about a woman who works for the local school system. Her job is the “Homeless Student Coordinator”. What? We have homeless children in my town. My, how oblivious I have been. Apparently we have approximately 300 homeless “students” here. 300!! That is unbelievable to me (I mean, I believe what they told me, I just don’t want to)! Some of the children will move from relative to relative, and others may sleep under bridges. And the average age of the “homeless students”? 9 Years Old! My heart was broken as soon as I heard that! I want to bring them all into my home now. I really do. I wonder if I could do that and not have Tim notice (we live in a one-bedroom apartment with two dogs, he’d notice).

I get to meet with the lady who coordinates the care of these children soon. I can’t wait how I can now become “invested” in loving and caring for the children that might be living on the street where I live, or sleeping under the bridge I drive under every day going to work.

Disclaimer: I am still rather ignorant to the whole world of working with people in unfortunate circumstances. If I say anything on here (I really work on not) that might be offensive wording or “politically incorrect”, I apologize. I am learning, please show me grace (and tell me about it too!).

So, I encourage you to look into the community that you live in and see what you can do to help take care of one another. I assure you that those people you “think” you are helping out and taking care of will end up helping you out more than you will ever imagine.

new year, new job, new challenge, new hobby

Wow, there are so many things going on right now…and I love it! I started my new job today. Did I tell you about that? I am no longer with the radio station. I am now working for Summit Leadership Foundation. We are a ministry who serves Christian leaders in the community, whether they be ministers or Christian leaders who own/manage a business, and connect them to the resources they need to make their ministry/passion/vision happen in order to further the Kingdom of Christ. I am really excited about this position. In another post I will tell you all of the things that have really just lined up to make this job possible for me. I love it! And I am SO excited about the amazing people I get to work with here. There are so many people that I will get to work with and serve that love the Lord so much. I can’t wait to learn from them. More on all of that later….

So what did you do for New Year’s? I did nothing! New Year’s Eve was my last day at work with the radio station. It was a BIG day for me there, loads to get finished. I did not leave until about 6:30 pm. I was exhausted. So when I got home, Tim had fixed dinner and set everything up so I could just relax. I loved it! (Man, he is so good to me). We watched a movie, and then I went to bed around 9:30. I can’t tell you the last time that I stayed up for midnight on New Years. I am such an old person!

However, on New Year’s Eve my little sister did celebrate a birthday. She is now 14 years old! I cannot believe that! One more year and she will have her learner’s permit!

And then on New Year’s Day one of my good friends, Katie Beth, celebrated her birthday. I did not get to talk to her, but I don’t feel to bad for it. She is living in Rome right now! Heck no I won’t feel bad Hehe!

For my New Year’s Challenge (notice I did not say resolution) I want to be more physically active. I do not do well with a work out routine, so I just want to make sure I do something at least 3 times a week where I am active for at least 30 minute. There are so many hiking trails around here and I do have 2 dogs I could walk (and I know they would love that). Anyway, so now I have a ‘09 challenge for myself.

I also have a new hobby…hopefully…for myself. I got a sewing machine for Christmas! I am so excited! I really want to learn how to sew. I have this whole idea of how I want our family (make some of our own clothes, get a lot of our food from the family garden, raise some animals and get our milk and meat from them, etc) and sewing fits perfectly into that! I don’t know why, but I love old timey ideas of raising a family.

One last thing…I got a new shelf in my laundry area. Ok, I know you care NOTHING about this. But I love it! I have been wanting to get a shelf for this area for awhile now. It has been a HUGE adjustment going from a 3 bedroom house with a garage and basement to a 1 bedroom apartment…with two dogs living with us. But since we have started getting rid of a lot of things and finding new means of storage, we really like it. The laundry area has been cluttered b/c I have just been setting things on top of my washer and dryer. I have been getting so claustrophobic (which is a new development as of getting married to a guy who suffers from severe claustrophobia). But since we (and when I saw we, I mean Tim) put the shelf in, I smile every time I see it. I am so shallow.

Ok, that was a lot. And I have a lot more where that came from. I have not had the time nor the desire to blog lately, but apparently do now :) . So…more to come later on.
